Lyric sheet

Destiny's Child - Emotion lyric sheet.

It's over and done
But the heartache lives on inside
And who's the one you're clinging to
Instead of me tonight?

And where are you now, now that I need you?
Tears on my pillow wherever you go
I'll cry me a river that leads to your ocean
You'll never see me fall apart

In the words of a broken heart
It's just emotion taking me over
Caught up in sorrow
Lost in the song
But if you don't come back
Come home to me, darling
Don't you know there's nobody left in this world to hold me tight?
Don't you know there's nobody left in this world to kiss goodnight
Goodnight, goodnight

I'm there at your side,
I'm part of all the things you are
But you've got a part of someone else
You've got to find your shining star

And where are you now, now that I need you?
Tears on my pillow wherever you go
I'll cry me a river that leads to your ocean
You'll never see me fall apart

In the words of a broken heart
It's just emotion taking me over
Caught up in sorrow
Lost in the song
But if you don't come back
Come home to me, darling
Don't you know there's nobody left in this world to hold me tight?
Don't you know there's nobody left in this world to kiss goodnight
Goodnight, goodnight

And where are you now, now that I need you?
Tears on my pillow wherever you go
I'll cry me a river that leads to your ocean
You'll never see me fall apart

In the words of a broken heart
It's just emotion taking me over
Caught up in sorrow
Lost in the song
But if you don't come back
Come home to me, darling
Don't you know there's nobody left in this world to hold me tight?
Don't you know there's nobody left in this world to kiss goodnight
Goodnight, goodnight

Examples of weak music videos.

We have been asked to select music videos that we consider as being weak. The main aspect that I think is important in a music video is to have extensive shot variation I find music videos with little shot variationcan be very boring especially with lack of lighting effects and other aspects that make the music video interesting. The idea of music videos is to entertain the audience and I find music videos with not narrative to be sometimes boring, a mix of both narrative and performance is key to me as a viewer. Also, an artists aim should be for their music videos to go viral, to get maximum hits and poentially awards for their work. You wont to make a music video to get a specific idea or theme across and not just because you see that you have to make one for a track to become more well known. Examples of  music videos i see as weak are shown below, some of which has been previously discussed.

Sean Kingston - Party all night (sleep all day) which I have previously blogged on was released in December 2010.

The reason I dont think it is a good video as this kind of party scene video has been done so many times in music videos, so its just not very interesting anymore although it is supposedly targeted at teenagers aged 15-24 it really isnt anything special and I actually find it annoying that directors repeat the same ideas so often in music videos, be a bit origional!
The lighting effects are good although it's all so false and you can tell has been produced with the highest level of equpiment, the shots are all very flat as technologies have been used not simply some tracking the camera manually. I also think that the text that appears on screen is very childish and cartoon like and should appear in tweenager music vids although this has been done simply to bring in the younger audiences. I just think music videos should be more origional especially when there are so many new and up and coming artists it should be competitive it is similar to a previous video Yeah by Usher but not as good although it also has similarities with Akons Smack that video, all of which using blue tints and part performance and narrative ideas and trying to percieve themselves as 'pimps'.

Wolfmother music video

A brief deconstruction of the music video:

- Generally quite a poor music video due to lack of shot variety although the band could be trying intentionally portray more indie and vintage even though theyaresigned to the big record company Modular Recordings.
- Clothing codes are old fashioned eg. the hair and styling (sideburns and permed hair)
- Blurring of the shots aswell as the song itself being quite retro (black and white shots)
- Referencing to the 60's hard rock bands for example Cream, Jimmy Hendrix trio known as classic rock referencing.
- Garage rock, they brand themselves as being backwardand intentionally  branding themselves.
- No closeups in the video, which is odd in a rock video especially of the instrument and main vocalist.

Britney Spears - Womanizer

Basic details about the music video:
- Lots of shot variety and fast paced editing.
- Britney is fully naked in the music video and lies on her back in a sauna, she is sweating and has wet hair carrying sexual connotations used to bring in the idea of the male gazeand male audience becoming the secondary audience.
- Uses Gratifications model, the audience creates their own meaning. The video may be aspirational for the female audience saying to the audience 'this is the body you should all have' her body is objectified and broken down into a number of shots, a:
feminist critique on the video would be that it is sxist and exploiting women
a post feminist critique on the video would be that the video is used to show that women are in control of their sexuality and are strong, assertive and in control.
- Britney is oiled up with could signify sweat and sexual connotations.
- There is a binary opposition between the two Britneys one in a steam room/sauna oiled up and naked and the other being the classic dull job of a secretary signified by the unfashionable thick square black glasses, she also wears a long pencil skirt which signifies professionalism and the blouse and pearl necklace signify a degree of sophistication. She also has short black conservative hair.

Destiny's child

Destinys Child.
Destinys child were an american R&B girl group formed in 1997 consisting of three female artists Beyonce Knowles, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams. The group eventually signed to Columbia Records who have also signed many other artists such as; Adele, AC/DC, Alexis Jordan, Barbra Strisand, Beyonce, Bob Dylan, Billy Ryan, Celine Dion, Cults, Dixie chicks, Foster the people, The Glee cast, Katy B, Pink Floyd and loads more. Columbia Records is the only label the band have been signed to.

Columbia Records is owned by the japanese company Sony Music Entertainment which operates under Columbia Music Group with Aware Records. The american record label was established in 1888. 'From 1961 to 1990, its recordings were released outside the U.S. and Canada on the CBS Records label (for Columbia Broadcasting System, its parent from 1938 to 1988) before adopting the Columbia name in most of the world.

Until 1989, Columbia Records had no connection to Columbia Pictures, which used various other names for record labels they owned, including Colpix and later Arista. Though Arista was later sold to BMG, it is now a sister label to Columbia Records through Sony Music; both are connected to Columbia Pictures through Sony Corporation of America, worldwide parent of both the music and motion picture arms of Sony.'

It wasnt always easy for the band though, the origionals (Beyonce Knowles, Kelly Rowland, LaTiva Robertson and LeToya Luckett) they spent years performing underground although throughout their career they ended up selling 40 million reocrds worldwide and in 2005 they were recognised as one of the best female groups of all time by the World Music Awards.

The song Lyrics - Emotion by Destiny's Child.
It's over and done
but the heartache lives on inside
And who's the one you're clinging to

And where are you now, now that I need you?
Tears on my pillow wherever you go

You never see me fall apart

In the words of a broken heart
it's just emotion taking me over
Caught up in sorrow

Come home to me, darling
don't you know there's nobody left in this world tohold me tight
nobody left in this world to kiss goodnight
Goodnight, goodnight

In the words of a broken heart
it's just emotion taking me over
Caught up in sorrow
lost in the song
but if you don't come back
Come home to me, darling
don't you know there's nobody left in this world tohold me tight
nobody left in this world to kiss goodnight
Goodnight, goodnight

The song was released in 2001 produced by Mark J Fiest.
The song was not an origional release by the band, it is a slower version of Samantha Sang origional aswell as after In 2002 a re-recorded mid-tempo version of Emotion, titled "The Neptunes Remix" was released on the album This Is The RemixDestinys childs re-make appeared on their album Survivor and debuted at number 65 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

The music video featured a triple split-screen effect. Kelly on the left, Beyonce in the center, and Michelle on the right. Kelly is seen saying goodbye to her boyfriend before he leaves in a taxi. Beyonce catches her boyfriend with another woman and runs around the house in tears and Michelle is with her grandmother, who has died in her bed surrounded by petals. At the end of the video Williams calls the other band members to her home. The three girls meet there and comfort each other and have a group hug and then screen returns to normal.

Final decision about music videos

Instead of making my idea for the coursework, I decided to go along with Katie Mallows' idea being the music video Emotion by Destiny's child. I voted for her idea because i've worked with her before when she was in Waxed last year so I know she takes it seriously but mainly because I liked the idea and she had put time into doing her pitch.
The Idea is: To have part narrative and part performance based video with five cast members (three band and a man and woman lead) the chosen song is very easy to relate to a break-up due to the lyrics. The video is going to be shot in three locations including: a cafe, train station and a home/ on the street. The band members will come into each location at separate times and lip sync the lyrics of the song. The song consists of six verses and six bridges, this gives each band member an equal chance to sing but a lead singer who would be taking the role of Beyonce Knowles in the video potentially played by Mel Abraham.

Final Pitch Idea for Monday

After having absolutly no idea what to do for my pitch, Ive finally decided to do a love song. Im going to be pitching the song Eternal Flame by The Bangles (see right), a song from the bands album Everything released in 1988. The track has been re covered by a number of bands but the most well known version is by Atomic Kitten (bottom)
I have not just looked at this video alone by most of the wellknown classic love songs which most people have heard of such as:
- With or without you by U2
- Iris by The Goo Goo Dolls
- Imagine by John Lennon
- Every breath you take by The Police
- Stand by me by The Temptations
- Everything I do for you By Bryan Adams and loads more.

The Atomic version video has much more of a pop feel compared to the origional video. There are three girls in the band at this time and they are all dressed in white signifying an angel like nature. They are in some sort of studio and there are bright blue lights surrounding them. Camera movements are very slow and they is alot of tracking and panning shots. What I have alos noticed from love song music videos is that there is never anything really going on in the videos and lack of differentiation in the shots that they do have which are almost always of the singers themselves lipsyncing.

The idea for my video using this song is to have a young school girl being a sterotypical nerd falling for a cool older guy quite alot older than her. The idea of love at first sight will be prominant as she dosn't even know him and some people would say she really doesnt have a chance. The idea will be different from most love song videos as it will have a bit of a story behind it. To make the video more interesting and abit funny the girl is going to have a rucksack, long skirt and ankle socks glasses and banoculers. There will also be a part performance bit to the video where three girls will be shown as band members in a studio setting lip syncing the lyrics so theres a contrast of performance and narrative to make the video more interesting and to get more people on board and involved with it.

More on the Bradford film festival.

We went to screening 1 in the cinema room where we got to watch all entries in film and music video, there were loads of different kinds and definatly more then expected animated films which had been done by mainly young kids. It was so weird to see our film that we made last year on the big screen and all the films shown theres group all recieved a certificate for their achievements.
I also enjoyed seeing the other classes film openings from our school because I hadnt seen them before and our school got quite alot of recognition for the work that had been put in. We all had to go up on stage and get our photographs taken and shake peoples hand it felt so weird. (top right photo taken by Telegraph and argus newspaper for entries in The Bradford film festival) Also at the bradford film festivals the stars from Harry Potter films were there James and Oliver Phelps (who play Fred and George Weasley) who launched the festival signed autographs/took photos with people and took part in a question and answer session open to the audience.

Today at the Bradford Film Festival - what we learnt.

Today we all went to the Bradford Film Festival when we arrived we all went to check on the game systems before going to our first class Basic Editing which involved using final cut pro similar to the software we're using Final cut express, although we already knew most of the tools to use it was a good recap session and we learnt shortcuts to the system instead of just using the mouse all the time.
The task in this session was to create a short documentary learning to import and capture footage onto Final Cut Pro using plugins and finally export the project. Useful sites for information is found on MacProvideo providing easy guidelines to the programme and step by step instructions about how to use it.
The general set up of the programme once opened consists of the top left window is the browser window used for simply storing clipsbefore editing. The bottom window is the timeline where footage and audio are shown ready to be edited here with a tool bar on the right hand side. The top middle browser is for viewing clips and where you can apply any effects and the far right window is the canvas window where previously edited clips are shown. There is also a framing advance tool at the bottom of the middle window in which you can move the clip on frame by frame for detailed editing.

Tools on the key board are also used such as:
I = inpoint (where you want the footage from on a take)
O= outpoint (where you want the footage to stop that your going to use)
A= selecting the cursor
B= selecting the cut tool to split clips or take sections out of a take.

We also learnt that to seperate video and audio you have to select the clip, deselesct the link tool and then resize the audio or clip so that the two can fit togather or with anither clip.

Bradford Film festival

Bradford film festival takes place tomorrow, which our years media students are all attending. We also went last year to get an introduction into media and what would be expected of us, going back now this year and watching my groups own production Waxed (screened on screen 1) will be strange but its also exciting. Waxed was my groups film production that we produced last year, I was in a group with Melodie Abraham and Emily Moore.
We will also be looking at theatrical make-up workshop which could help us with producing our music video this year as well as an advanced editing class and music videos from last year at screen 2.
